“Great Value!”

Humphrey's Half Moon Inn & Suites

Wow! More than we expected. Based on good reviews we decided to stay at Humphrey's Half Moon on Shelter Island - and we were not disappointed. Good value for the money, great staff, location okay - occasional jet noise from the base during the day, noticeable but not annoying. Wonderful area for walking - excellent Pizza place within walking distance (Villa Nova) - probably some of the best food we had in San Diego. If you do not have a car, and do not want to deal with public transit, it will cost you about $20 one way to get to just about any place - Balboa Park, Downtown, Old Town, etc. The room was very clean - lots of closet space good size bathroom. I would not book a partial bay view room, rather book the pool view, because the partial bay view room is way on the other side of the parking lot - - and a very partial view :). The restaurant onsite was fabulous for breakfast, had a great view of the harbor and very healthy meal choices. It was so good we couldn't bring ourselves to eat breakfast any place else. We didn't get to experience any concert but if we had the opportunity would definitely partake in one there - very nice set up.

    • Disliked — partial bay view was very partial - and should have been promoted as view of parking lot

“Fourth visit and we are going back to make it five.”

This was are fourth visit to Humphrey's Half Moon at Shelter Island San Diego. I would think that the majority of people are impressed when they arrive at the hotel for the first time and see the beautiful grounds and surrounding area.
Things that we like about the hotel are ; the restaurant particularly for breakfast and the staff are excellent , there is a terrific swimming pool , the Senier Concierge is excellent , she knows the area very well , has good tips on restaurants and family activities.
There are quite regularly concerts at the hotel and this can obviously make the place very busy and also parking can be a bit more difficult , so its worth being aware which nights the concerts are on.
This is a very good location for all the main attractions in San Diego.

“Needs a little fixing up”

Humphrey's Half Moon Inn & Suites

3 of 5 stars
Glendora, CA
May 10, 2008

Shelter Island is a pleasant location for smaller meetings and Humphrey's Half Moon Inn has been around awhile. Rooms have a nice view of the marina or pool area many with a pleasant seating area outside the room. My thought many public areas and my room could use a little work.

The carpet had significant stains my the door, the table, and between the beds. A coat of paint and better lighting would also make the room more pleasant. The bathtub/shower looked like it had been refinished or repaired, but it did appear clean as did the sink and toilet. The bed was fine though the bedding was very thin and minimal. The TV had the usual on-demand pay per view options.

Staff here was friendly and helpful. The front desk was cordial and assisted me on a couple of problems. The bar was very noisy and I went to the resort next door for a glass of wine and conversation.

The pool was nice and had the weather been warmer, I'm sure more people would have taken advantage of the lovely setting. The planters looked nice and some had recently been refreshed. Ground crews were visible each morning keeping the property fresh.

There are live concerts and shows here on the weekends spring and summer with some well known entertainers. The outdoor theater looks intimate. Beware if you're not planning to attend the show and staying here...it might be a little busy and noisy. Also, if you are attending the show, the seats have no padding and they are hooked together. You will be touching your neighbor unless they're very slender.

Other properties on Shelter Island looked like they've been updated or rebuilt including Island Palms and Kona Kai which looks to be the former Shelter Pointe. Bay Club next door looked better maintained.

Humphrey's is still a pleasant place to enjoy on Shelter Island. A little paint, new carpets, better bedding would go a long way in returning the property to its potential as a much higher than average resort.

Very clean hotel and grounds. Attention to detail is important to the staff. Chief Concierge was the best. Humphrey's Restaurant has good food at a reasonable price for the area. Liked the ability to print boarding passes before leaving. Beautiful location and only 15 minutes away from many tourist areas.

“Well above expectations and great experience”

Booked last minute and was a little worried when the reservation came in. This was a great deal though, excellent room that looked like it had just been remodeled. The staff was very helpful and upgraded us right away upon arrival to a suite overlooking the water for first time visit. Our 3 kids loved the room and the feel of the Inn. More like a B and B, you will not be disappointed. We stay in San Diego every year and this was one of our best stays.
