My family and I stayed at the French Quarter section of the Port Orleans Resort at Disney in July. This was my first time staying at a Disney on-site hotel and my expectations were high.
We got to the hotel much earlier than the check in time and with some light prodding at check in, the very cordial Desk Clerk got us into a ready room immediately. The walk to the room was very nice as the grounds are well maintained and the pool area is beautiful.
Once we got to the room, I was a disappointed in its condition. There were obvious dirt marks on the furniture and the carpet was dingy. I knew we had gotten in early and clean rooms were hard to get into at that time of the morning so, with my kids anxious to get to EPCOT, we headed out without complaint. I had hoped the Housekeeper would remedy the issues with the next cleaning.
Day two and after 14 hours at the Magic Kingdom we returned to find the room in the same condition with the exception of the beds being made and the linens refreshed. Usually I would file a complaint, but at midnight, I knew it was useless so I waited until morning. The next morning I registered my complaint with the Front Desk Supervisor who told me my room would be perfect for the rest of my stay. She quickly offered an adjustment on my bill, which I was not looking for, but graciously accepted.
After a third day of enjoying the park #3, we returned to the room to find it had not gotten the deep cleaning I requested. I promptly called and asked to speak to the Housekeeping Manager and asked him to come up to the room so he could see what condition the Housekeeper was leaving the room in on a daily basis. He was in the middle of another situation at the Riverside and promised he would be to my room as quickly as possible. He was there promptly and agreed that there was no way the room met the standards of the hotel and he comped my night on the spot as a result. He offered to have someone clean my room, but since it was after 9pm and we had already been there for two nights, it would have been pointless, since we were checking out at the end of the third night. In addition to the comped night, he did arrange for a late check-out for us.
Aside from the hotel room, the remainder of the hotel is wonderful. We took advantage of the Disney food plan and ate breakfast at the local restaurant every morning. The meals were tasty and filling. The service was excellent and the atmosphere festive, with a Mardi Gras theme.
The grounds are wonderfully maintained and very shady with lots of trees to shade the area. The pool is large, clean and was enjoyed by all.
The resort is not on the monorail system though so getting to and from the parks requires a wait for a shuttle bus to take guests back and forth. If they ran a little more frequently, that would be a bonus, but other than that, it was fine. The resort also has a direct link to Downtown Disney via a water taxi. The 15 minute ride is relaxing and enjoyable, with Downtown Disney offering many options for dining and shopping.
Aside from the room debacle, I would say we enjoyed our stay at the Port Orleans French Quarter. I would stay there again on the hopes that the dirty room was an anomaly and we would not have a repeat issue. The service was wonderful, the staff attentive and the grounds a pleasant retreat after a long day at the parks.
