“Not bad...not wonderful....Doable.....”

Southernmost on the Beach

3 of 5 stars

Property is at the quiet end of Duval. Get ready to walk at least a mile each way if you want to go to the other end of Duval where most of the bustle and sunsets are....we drove but parking is very hard to find. we walked everywhere. there are people taxis but they charge too much. The property was clean, room was nice and clean. Bathroom was nicely rennovated. But its just a room. Bed, TV, bathroom...and the photos misled me because i thought we had a true balcony, but really each room just has a walk out to the walkway/balcony that is all connected. and its outside your entry door. so there is no balcony off the back of the room. the photos on the web site are totally misleading there. The beach is small and cute, but the water is totally unswimmable and even too brown/murky/seaweedy for wading to cool off. we didnt even use the beach here because it was too hot to not have somewhere to cool off. this is not a true beach, just a sandy spot. So overall, the hotel was so-so. The pool was out of order which we did not really care about anyway because it was small and unattractive. Go to the Southernmost hotel pool with the tiki bar. MUCH nicer!

We were lucky to meet a honeymooming couple and stay at their 2-bedroom luxury suite for our last night, at no cost. These are 1.5 million$ suites that they rent out for less than $250 a night and are 2 bedroom, so VERY affordable if you have 4 people. They were AWESOME, subzero appliances in the kitchen, 3 bathrooms, granite counters, kohler applicances, glass walls, an tropical poool set up. So this blew the Southernmost out of the water. It was called Santa Maria suites and ill write a review there too.

Anyway, the Southernmost is at the quiet end. If we go back, I will stay at the Santa Maria suites or at one of the many cute questhouses/b&bs...they are more centrally located.

The 2 beaches in Key West, Smather's beach and Fort Zachary st park are good. We had a car so we drove. Dont try to walk to Ft. Zachary Taylor beach, about a 30 min. walk each way in the HEAT....drive there. Nice beach, decent water but not totally clear and rocky bottom. Smathers is much longer and has many food vendors. There is a lot of sea grass but if you walk over it, you get to a clear portion of the ocean which is great.

We did a Fury all day boat tour which had snorkel, parasailing, jet skiing, kayak, breakfast, lunch, drinks and other water games. $139 pp, includes a sunset cruise which is pretty boring but has free alcohol ( for another day).....have done many many tours and this one ranks up there as the most worth is one. That is a lot of activity for $139 pp...very good price.

did a lot of research on food beforehand and it paid off. You MUST go to:

Blue Heaven - breakfast
Santiago's Bodega - dinner (tapas)
ilTrattoria - Italian dinner and there is a salsa bar in the back, separated
Ambrosia - Japanese
5 brothers for empanadas and cuban lunches
Rooftop Cafe for dinner
Hog's Breath bar for $10 oysters

overall, loved Key West, loved the food especially, the bars, Duval street, the beaches, even though there are few, the people, everything, it was great!

“Nice hotel, shame about the building work and noise”

Southernmost on the Beach

Jul 1, 2008

A great setting for a hotel and as they say right on the beach and just off Duval Street where it all happens with about a ten/fifteen minute walk to sloppy joes and the cente of town.
The room was fine with all you could need if not a touch on the small side. booking in was no problem but after that the reception staff offered little or no help with local knowlege or any small problems we may have had.
The main drawback was the MAJOR building work that was taking place during our visit. A large extention to the hotle was under construction just to the rear of our room and work would start at 8.00am. At one point the pool was shuttered off whilst it was still in use. We felt that on occasions we should have been given a 'hard hat' to get to our room.
This we felt should realy have been made mention of on the hotel web site.
Still worthg a visit, but wait until the work is over!!

“GREAT TRIP”

We stayed for a week and had a great time in Key West. SMH is very nice and the people working the front desk were extremely helpful. Sure the construction is there but the noise does not wake you. The seaweed collects every day but they remove it almost every day. The other beaches around Key West smell because of the rotting seaweed not being removed. Prices aren't too bad at the beach cafe' and the pools are warm. The whole experience was relaxing. The hotel is on the quiet end of Duval which after being there, we were glad about that as well.

“It's the Southern"most"”

Southernmost on the Beach

Jun 19, 2008

As a first-time guest at Southernmost on the Beach, my experience was wonderful. I was on the second floor with a beautiful view of the ocean and the beach, which was a great spot for catching the sunrise and watching the activity on the beach (or the lack thereof.) The beach is nice and intimate with lounge chairs, umbrellas and the Southernmost Beach Café that you can wander up to in your bathing suit or shorts. What’s great is that it’s open air, so there’s always a breeze flowing. The food is excellent; I especially liked their Sesame Tuna and their Key Lime pie. Plus, they made a really tasty vodka gimlet.

I loved my room. It was nicely appointed with colorful new bedding, a bistro table, two chairs, and more than enough drawer and hanging space for clothes. My room also had a built-in desk for my laptop, free wireless internet and “working” air conditioning. The first night I was there, I couldn’t get onto their wireless network, so I called the front desk and by the time I returned from dinner, I was pleasantly surprised to find their IT guy had taken care of my problem. It’s rare to find such prompt and friendly service.

The location of the hotel couldn’t be better. Right in Old Town, I walked everywhere - the Butterfly Museum, the galleries and restaurants on Duval Street, and Mallory Square for the sunset. If you don’t feel like walking, the hotel has cute scooters for rent. If you’re a wine lover like I am, wander down to Grand Vin, introduce yourself to Buzz and chat with the locals. We had a great time at this lively little joint. Louie’s Back Porch, Antonia’s and La Te Da are some of the other cozy places we stopped at to have drinks and dinner. I would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it to anyone who’s looking for the best location, a quiet beach and great accommodations.

“Nice Hotel, Better View”

Southernmost on the Beach

I stayed at the Southernmost on the Beach mid-May 2008 with three girlfriends and had a great time. There was only one disappointing thing, we had paid extra for an ocean view room with private balcony, and our room was directly over the parking lot, with the ocean to the left through the palm trees. That was a bit misleading. However, the facilities were great, our room was not near the current construction, so we had no distractions.

The beach was small with a cute restaurant on site. Beach chairs were $5.00 for the day, however, so be prepared for that cost. The pool was very well maintained and the temperature was great. There is a tiki bar on the other side of the property, Southernmost Hotel, and the staff there was fantastic. Our server was so nice, attentive, and friendly.

The atmosphere of the hotel as a whole was perfect, you couldn't be more relaxed. I only downgraded my rating due to the non-direct ocean view, but I would absolutely stay at Southernmost on the Beach again.
