My husband and I stayed at Maravu Plantation Resort from 10/06/2007 – 10/14/2007 and were married there on 10/10/2007 (see his review below – Stefan Brandes). We enjoyed everything about our first trip to Fiji…from the gorgeous coconut palm tree filled island of Taveuni, the diving along Somosomo Strait, the Fijian people who are truly the friendliest people on Earth, and of course Maravu Plantation Resort.
I felt like we really got to enjoy Fiji at it’s purest by visiting Taveuni. We were not bound to a resort island but got a chance to really explore the island, hiking to Bouma Waterfalls, visiting a local village (meeting with the chief and touring the elementary school), and shopping for Fijian artwork (handicrafts) around Somosomo Village. Taveuni is a beautifully lush island and exactly what I wanted for our trip to the South Pacific.
Maravu Plantation Resort far exceeded our expectations. While there are other resorts on Taveuni and on smaller islands surrounding Taveuni that are more expensive and thus more modern and newer, Maravu provided the true Fijian experience we wanted. Our accommodations (Honeymoon Deluxe Suite #17 & Oceanview Spa Villa #18) were absolutely beautiful, with four-poster beds and simple but elegant island furnishings. We especially loved the outdoor shower (never took one indoors) and the private plunge pool. We were originally booked in another Oceanview Spa Villa (#21) that was their largest with largest private pool, but when we saw that it only had a partial ocean view they kindly moved us at our request. As my husband said, the wall of windowed doors that completely opened up onto the outdoor deck with the full ocean view was stunning!
Food at Maravu was top notch in my opinion. Yes there was a casual elegance about it but presentation was always beautiful and it tasted so good. They make amazing soups and I loved them all so much that I ordered soup every day it was offered. Each one was better then next. And this was odd to me because I never expected to love eating soup in the tropics! The steak dinner they made for our private wedding dinner was exceptional. Omelettes in the morning were also yummy, as well as the muffins and the pineapple jam I fell in love with and had to buy before returning home.
There are plenty of activities to keep you busy during your stay. From paid excursions, to the free afternoon classes at the resort, horseback riding, free kayaking and snorkeling equipment…You will never get bored unless you want to be. As has been mentioned the private beach is a short walk down the hill and across the street. I too was honestly concerned about this and it was probably my only reservation about Maravu before getting there. But I can honestly tell you it was never an issue. Our bures were very private and thus tucked either towards the back of the property or up on the hill. Walking through the beautiful grounds down the slight hill or walking down the stairs from our oceanview bure, our walk never took more the 2-3 minutes. And although you do cross a street and that street is the main road around the island, you have to remember that getting cars to the island is very expensive as well as gas, so there really aren’t many cars. We never had any worries, even when crossing at night. What you do get is a small, private beach that many times you enjoy all to yourself.
Finally, our wedding. I wanted a stress-free but beautiful wedding. And that is exactly what I got. Laite planned our perfect day. All I had to do was give her a general idea of what I wanted and she took care of the rest. As my husband told you regarding the video camera, they went above and beyond to make sure we had the most perfect day. And I can honestly say we did. I wouldn’t change a thing. It was perfect!
I have no hesitation recommending Maravu Plantation Resort or Taveuni to anyone. We can’t wait to go back (and check out the coconut palm we planted at the wedding). We look forward most to seeing people that we came to treasure as an integral part of our wonderful trip to Fiji: Laite, Maria, Mary, Titi, Esther, Liberta, Tracy, Tina, Chuckey, Bubba, Maria (in the restaurant) Suka, Sevu, William, Abraham, and everyone else I’m missing. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!
Also thanks to Qio and Caption Harry at Jewel Bubble Divers for my first dive experience. It was amazing and now I’m hooked. If I don’t get certified before I’m back in Fiji, I will definitely do it with you.
