“Too basic and bland to return”

Amara Singapore Hotel

We stayed one night in Swissotel Merchant Hotel Singapore going to our honeymoon destination in Bali and one night in Amara on our way back. Noteworthy, we payed the same price for both. Maybe, if we didn't have anything to compare to, we would have rated Amara as sure 4 points, but...The room is just too basic, kind of Ikea style, for the price paid and the Merchant's location was so much nicier. Also, we booked a non smoking room, but got into smoking one and the conditioning was freezing cold, the switcher and temperature regulator didn't work, unfortunately. So, altogether Amara didn't work for us.

“Worth it”

Amara Singapore Hotel

May 23, 2008

2 Nights. Great stay. Great pool.

Had a Tropical Six room. Nothing really tropical about it though. And to open the window I had to boost up from a sofa to reach a ledge, and then stretch to open to window, I'm 6'1 and even to me it was hard to reach.

They let me check in 2 hours early which is to be commended.

For dinner go round to the Maxwell food centre. Great food and hardly any tourists.

“Good, but issues with booking”

Amara Singapore Hotel

Everything in the Amara was of a high standard. Breakfast was great.

We booked a double room using Octopus website, when we arrived we were given a twin room and told a double would cost a lot more. After a lot of arm twisting and arguing the front desk staff at upgraded us for free. This was the only sour point in an otherwise great stay.

“Comfortable business class hotel”

Amara Singapore Hotel

3 of 5 stars

SUMMARY:
An average business hotel with all the expected amenities. No special character, but a pleasant and reasonably comfortable stay. Would have no problems staying here again if needed, but at this price range there are plenty of alternatives to choose from that will offer likely similar experiences. I will be trying another hotel next time in Singapore as there was nothing particular about this hotel that draws you back. Overall though, the stay was comfortable enough.

SERVICE:
Overall, no complaints. Our arrival at midnight was pleasant since there were no surprises - check-in was smooth and quick. The bell staff on hand was eager to suggest nearby late night eating options with us, which was helpful after 28 hours of airplane food. There weren't any other service points to speak of, as we didn't make any special requests or require any special attention, but overall the staff was polite, friendly, and made our stay comfortable.

LOCATION:
Not central (i.e., not located near Orchard Road) but very practically located nonetheless: 5 minute walk to the closest subway (MRT), as well as a 5 minute walk to the Maxwell Food Centre, which is an amazing experience for foodies (rows of outdoor stalls under one large compound roof) for varied, local, and cheap & delicious fare. We were able to get everywhere we wanted to go quickly via the extensive MRT routes, thus the placement is quite ideal while not being extremely busy right outside the hotel door. The hotel is quite close to Chinatown, however, so eating options abound within 10-15 minutes of walking.
Approx 20 minute Taxi ride to the airport if arriving after 11:30 PM, otherwise, the MRT does stop right inside the airport for an extremely cheap alternative (although quite a bit lengthier - it took about 1 hour to get to the airport via this method.)

HOTEL GROUNDS:
The hotel itself is modern and classy enough for a business hotel. No complaints. The pool is beautiful and wonderfully relaxing - as close to a mid-city oasis that a standard business hotel pool can be. You will not find a nicer outdoor pool of this style at any similarly priced hotels in Singapore. The pool is large enough to do laps, as well as being a wonderul place to just relax.

ROOMS & ACCOMODATION
The room feels slightly on the smaller side, for two poeple. The space is functional, but not overly spacious. The bathroom, on the other hand, is spacious and beatifully laid in marble, and feels quite luxurious, with both marble shower and separate tub for bathing. The beds were average firm.

CLEANLINESS:
The room itself was clean and spotless, but the bathroom was dirtier than what you would expect from a business class hotel (example: we had to re-clean our toilet seat.) Bathroom amenities were replaced daily.

Viva the Singapore Sling!

“Did not really feel at home”

Amara Singapore Hotel

We stayed at the Amara Singapore for three days and were given a polite but not very warm welcome. After the friendliness and warmth of the staff at the Furama in Da Nang and the Angkor Century in Siem Reap, this was like a cold shower. The room was ok, the front desk staff not very helpful when it came to asking information about sights and maps. The atmosphere in the breakfast room was not very nice, I would even call it unpleasant. All in all we did not really feel at home. The Amara may be conveniently located for business travellers but I would not recommend it to tourists.
