This family-run bed and breakfast is outside the hustle and bustle of Chiang Mai's center. The distance was no issue at all as the proprietors arranged for a cab to deliver us into the center of town and pick us up. Our guestroom was an individual treehouse-like hut which we accessed by climbing a staircase to a large landing, with each "room" spaced a good distance from the last. The construction of our room is very solid, and given the natural rustic-feeling setting I was surprised to find that we had excellent air-conditioning, a decent-sized bathroom with amenities (soap, conditioner, shampoo), a hot water heater for the shower, and a TV with DVD player! The bed was very comfortable and I had the best night's sleep on my trip to Thailand, thus far.
One advantage to the location out of town is that the air was significantly cooler than inside the city. This is also helped by the owner's devotion to horticulture, particularly ferns, and his having planted and maintained numerous large, shady trees to keep the property cool. He was kind enough to show me his fern garden and "greenhouse" area where he propagates his many species of ferns. Each member of the family was friendly and went out of their way to make me feel at home while staying at Fern Paradise. This interpersonal warmth is the quality that really makes this hotel unique.
