“Great Experience”

Plaza Athenee Bangkok, A Royal Meridien Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Mumbai (Bombay), India
May 27, 2008

I would say the experience was great. I booked the hotel from spg.com. You can get good deals online, and almost all deals included breakfast. Overall I paid $210 for a club room with breakfast.

Airport-Hotel: From the airport there are 2 ways to get to hotel. AOT Airport authorized limo or meter taxi. We took the airport limo as we had a bit of luggage. All meter taxis run on CNG so the boot space is about enough for a medium sized bag. It costs about 450 baht plus tolls on metex taxi and 950 baht all inclusive with airport limo. If you dont mind spending the extra money, take the airport limo. Hassfle free and great cars.

Location: The hotel is located between Sukhumvit and Siam Paragon at a sky train station called Ploenchit. The station entrance is less than a 5 minute walk from the hotel. I think this is a much better location than staying at sukhumvit.

Hotel & Room: Grand lobby. We were checked in at the club floor as we had club rooms. The room is a good size, maybe around 350 sft. It has all the modern amenities DVD player, flat screen TV etc. Nice large size bathroom. My kid slept on the couch, she is 5, but it was a bit uncomfortable for her so from the 2nd nite she would hop onto the bed some time in the night.

Lounge: The club lounge is great. They have free happy hours from 6-8 PM daily. Now I have seen my share of happy hours where the hotel serves you the cheapest booze on hand. Not here. They had top of the line vodka, whiskey, single malts, wines and of course any cocktail you desired. Free wifi internet access. This itself will save you 15 bucks a day as using the net in the lounge is free, why pay for it in your room!!! We used to have drinks at the lounge before heading out to dinner. Probably saved a good amount here also. Very nice and helpful club lounge staff. Always smiling and ready to help.

Breakfast: If you are booked at the club room you can choose to eat breakfast at the cafe in the lobby. that is a much better option as you will get more variety. The only problem I had is that I was there 4 days and everyday they have identical breakfast. They could have changed a few things.... but I am nitpicking here.

Tips: You will be better of using the sky train if you want to go to Siam or early part of Sukhumvit. Its so close that no taxi wants to go. If you are using taxi please please ensure the taxi driver starts the meter. Whenever they see foreigners they try not to start and then argue at the end for a fare. And Bangkok taxi drivers are aggressive so you are better off ensuring that is he is not starting the meter u take a different cab.

Overall: Great hotel, great staff, great service. I got no reason to complain. Whenever I go back to Bangkok I am staying at this hotel again.

“Luxury! Fine service !”

Plaza Athenee Bangkok, A Royal Meridien Hotel

May 6, 2008

Prestigious, Affordable and service is at its finest. Definitely the lobby shocks you with its grandeur and it is no wonder that wealthy thai business men choose to hold their sons and daughters weddings here. During my stay one of the top business men in BKK held a ball for 3000 people there. Ok it was hectic to get a cab during that hour but the luxury and wealth was oozing from the guests who entered the hotel stepping out of their luxury cars. Thats all I need to know about a hotel. And infact its true.

“Hospitality at its best”

Plaza Athenee Bangkok, A Royal Meridien Hotel

Mar 30, 2008

I stayed two days at the Plaza Athenee after a friend of mine recommended it to me.
It is a very nice hotel in the city center of Bangkok, just a few minutes away from the Sky Train station.

The room was very spacious, nicely decorated and had a flat-screen TV. In my opinion, what you would expect from a high-class hotel.
But the most important thing to me and that really makes the difference to other five star hotels is the service provided by the staff. That's what I call exceptional.
I highly recommend this hotel and will definitely stay again at the Plaza Athenee!

“Not a great choice for Bangkok”

In short although the reception is impressive, the rooms are bland and nothing special. Its a typical corporate style chained hotel room which makes you feel like you could be anywhere in the world but nowhere in particular. There are plenty of far nicer hotels in Bangkok, so i wouldnt waste your money here. Try the Peninsula or the Conrad for better value for money and a feeling of being in the far east!

“Ruern Thai suite.....fantastic!!”

Plaza Athenee Bangkok, A Royal Meridien Hotel

Ruern Thai suite....fantastic

Life is short, and it's only money....so why not invest in memorable travel? For our anniversary, we booked the Ruern Thai suite, one of the Plaza Athenee's four themed suites.

As we pulled up to the hotel, I noticed three hotel managers standing outside, holding flower garlands. "Are they here for us?", I asked my husband. Yes, they were. Greeting, wai-ing, and offering flowers, it was the warmest welcome we've ever received, as the whole group escorted us to our elegant suite. The wood-paneled suite mixed antique Ayutthaya-period sculptures and wood carvings with contemporary silk-covered furnishings, but managed to feel as comfortable as borrowing a friend's beautiful apartment. Beautiful large apartment, that is....2000 square feet, with a dining room, living room, two bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, and a butler pantry/kitchen. Opening into the master bedroom was a fantastic bathroom, starring a huge tiled tub. The separate shower area included a traditional ceramic water-jar, with a wooden dipper for sluicing off. All room had floor-to-ceiling windows, and gorgeous flowers were everywhere. A light lemongrass scent filled the air, and our clothing remained perfumed for days afterwards.

In general, we found the Plaza Athenee's staff to be, by far, the best trained of any 5-star hotel on our trip---friendly, attentive, and always ready to assist. The hotel's breakfast buffet offers an endless variety from many cuisines...and our anniversary dinner at the hotel's Smooth Curry restaurant was good enough to make us wonder why we'd spent the past several weeks eating the blander food of Vietnam. And although the hotel isn't on the river, it's very close proximity to a skytrain station makes the entire city easily and quickly accessible.

Tip: avoid the Starwood Group's insanely frustrating web site, and, call or e-mail the Plaza Athenee directly to book the Ruern Thai suite. I dealt with their wonderful finance manager, Freya Duncker, but probably anyone at their reservations desk could initially assist.
