“Good for a family visit to Disney”

Portofino Inn & Suites

May 17, 2008

I was a little worried about this hotel after reading some of the reviews on this site. It was fine. We booked the kids suite and yes it is not soundproof but for goodness sakes, you are a parent with kids! It worked out just fine. It was about a 15 min walk to Disney with the shuttle right outside.

Hotel was clean and close. The pool was nice. What more to do you need when you are at Disney for most of the time?

Portofino Inn & Suites

Just got back from the Portofino Inn and Suites from a 6 night stay, I would say all in all in was a very average experience.
I have read a few reviews here stating that the front desk were not friendly and I have to say that is completely false. They were very nice and wanted to help everytime I stepped in the lobby. A few complaints I would have were the same as some others...very loud!! The noise level is very high from the people walking upstairs to walking down the hallways on your floor, the doors from each room when closed are very loud and can be quite disruptive.
A few of my own complaints, I find it hard to believe that the Portofino does not offer a continental breakfast?? With virtually every hotel in the area offering one how this hotel that caters to families does not is very surprising. They do operate the Jolly Roger Cafe which is a short walk through the parking lot and think with a little effort they could offer something. I got a little tired walking to 7-11 to get coffee(in room coffee stinks!).
The kids suite does have 2 rooms, kinda, but when you close the doors to the kids area why they would have drapes that are basically see thru is a bit of a mystery???? Why they wouldn't have darker coverings on those doors is quite perplexing. It offers less privacy than first thought when I booked the room.
Also don't be fooled by the pics of the pool, it looks big but is quite tiny. Not horrible but not what was presented in photos.

All in all the hotel itself was ok, we didn't any major complaints but wouldn't stay again. it is right between where walking is comfortable and taking a shuttle is a waste of time. I have read some people say that the walk is around 15 min to the park, that is untrue. The walk never took me more than 10 min and that is pushing it. The shuttle for the ART picks you up right in front of the hotel but with it coming every 20 min it seemed silly considering we could be at the park before the shuttle ever showed up for pick up, also Portofino is the first stop so you need to travel to the rest of the hotels before heading to Disneyland. But on the way back you are the first stop.

If you are not worried about no breakfast and the short walk then this hotel would be fine, The rooms were clean and the staff was friendly, but I said we would not stay again for some of the reasons above.

“Loved the Kid Suite”

Portofino Inn & Suites

5 of 5 stars
California
May 14, 2008

We just got back from a stay here, we usually stay at one of the Disneyland Hotels, so I was a little worried, and for no reason at all. The hotel was excellent! We arrived at 11am, checked in, and were given our room early, that was wonderful. The kid suite is definately the way to go. The room was huge, plenty of space for the kids to play, they loved having their "own" room, and we weren't all stuck on top of each other. If we wanted to watch something on tv, we actually could, their were two tv's which made it extra nice. The room was very clean, plenty of towels, and the bed was very comfortable, which is sometimes hard to come by at a hotel. The walk to Disneyland was only 10min, and my 5 year old had no problem. We will be staying here again! Oh, and I left something in the room, and they are mailing it back to me, I had pretty much written it off, but they found it, wow.

“Loved the Kds Suite”

Portofino Inn & Suites

On our last trip to Disney, we stayed at the Travel Lodge directly across the street from the entrance on Harbour Blvd and we had every intention of staying there again. But this time we had my mom with us and I was afraid the extra adult would cramp the standard rooms that hotel had to offer. She had previously stayed at the Portofino and suggested it as an alternative. While we definitely missed the short walk into the park, this hotel room was a major hit with the kids. We had the Kids Suite which we got for $10 less than the standard room at the other hotel. There was a king bed and tv in it's own room. A separate room had a fold out sofa, 2nd tv, child size table and chairs and (the highlight for the kids) bunk beds. The room was more than comfortable for three adults and two kids and a larger group would have still been comfortable. The room was also clean including the furniture and bedding which is always the biggest plus to me. Staff was friendly and I saw a security guard several times in different places around the grounds during the evening. And he looked like a "real" security guard that could actually serve his purpose.
The ONLY downside to this hotel was the distance from the entrance, though to be honest it probably would have only been about a 15 minute walk. If you can't deal with that what are you doing going to Disneyland? My mom wanted to the take the ART trolley bus but if you don't time it right, you'll have to wait for the bus (they come every 20 minute) and then it makes several other stops before Disney. What took us 40 minutes on the bus would have only taken 15 if we'd walked. On the up side, the Portofino is the 1st stop coming home from Disney.
Overall I would say this was a great place to stay and though I wish it was a little closer to the entrance - it was such a hit with the kids we will definitely stay there again.

“Great Location & Comfortable Stay”

Portofino Inn & Suites

We stayed in the Kids Suite from 4/5 to 4/9 with 5 adults and 1 child (my in-laws stayed in a King Suite). The rooms was clean and comfortable. 2 adults slept on the sofa bed and said it was very comfortable. We went to Unviversal Studios, Seaworld and Disneyland and the walk from the hotel to Disneyland was only 10 min max. I do agree with some of the reviews of the window coverings - they are very thin and do let the light in early in the morning - but if you are there for Disneyland (which most people that stay here are) who cares!! You are going to be up early anyway. There is not as much privacy as they would have you think between the french doors in the Kids & King suites - you can see right through the thin material on the doors. But overall it was a great experience and I would definitly stay here again.

PS - The restaurant below (next door) at the Jolly Roger was like an old Dennys diner. The food was not that good - I would recommend ordering a pizza from Papa Johns a few blocks away or calling the Chinese take out just up the street - they are fast and much better that this restaurant, plus after a long day at Disneyland it worked out well. You can even call them on your walk back from the park and it can be ready when you get there.
