The Carlyle Suites bills itself as an "art deco" hotel. Yes there is a hint of the era in the property but it's no great example of the architectural genre.
This property has spacious rooms, even a small kitchen. For families on a budget for an extended stay this may be a good choice. For the professional traveler, this hotel is not that wonderful.
My biggest criticism is the $50 charge for early check-outs. Business travelers need that flexibility and should not be penalized. I think the policy is short-sighted. I did indeed need to leave DC one day early and the charge left a sour taste in my mouth and the front desk manager told me brusquely there was no room for negotiation, even though I was giving more than 24 hours notice.
Without this charge, I would easily be recommending this hotel to colleagues because of its location, cost, cleanliness and free wi-fi internet. Instead I am advising my company and others I know who visit DC frequently for business to avoid this hotel. So the hotel extracted the $50 out of me but have lost potentially thousands of dollars from my colleagues and friends because of this policy.
Front desk personnel were lethargic, not overly friendly. I did not feel a lot of hospitality here. Laundry needs to be taken to the front desk for drop-off and it is not returned to the room automatically.
If Carlyle is after the families on a fixed itinerary touring DC then perhaps they are on the right track, but if they want to attract government and business travelers then some improvements need to be made.
