“Nice-sized rooms but...”

The Carlyle Suites

3 of 5 stars
New Delhi, India

The Carlyle Suites bills itself as an "art deco" hotel. Yes there is a hint of the era in the property but it's no great example of the architectural genre.

This property has spacious rooms, even a small kitchen. For families on a budget for an extended stay this may be a good choice. For the professional traveler, this hotel is not that wonderful.

My biggest criticism is the $50 charge for early check-outs. Business travelers need that flexibility and should not be penalized. I think the policy is short-sighted. I did indeed need to leave DC one day early and the charge left a sour taste in my mouth and the front desk manager told me brusquely there was no room for negotiation, even though I was giving more than 24 hours notice.

Without this charge, I would easily be recommending this hotel to colleagues because of its location, cost, cleanliness and free wi-fi internet. Instead I am advising my company and others I know who visit DC frequently for business to avoid this hotel. So the hotel extracted the $50 out of me but have lost potentially thousands of dollars from my colleagues and friends because of this policy.

Front desk personnel were lethargic, not overly friendly. I did not feel a lot of hospitality here. Laundry needs to be taken to the front desk for drop-off and it is not returned to the room automatically.

If Carlyle is after the families on a fixed itinerary touring DC then perhaps they are on the right track, but if they want to attract government and business travelers then some improvements need to be made.

“Good value”

This hotel was recommended by a friend who had stayed there, as I was searching for a moderately priced hotel near the central D.C. area for a birthday trip with my 16-year-old son. I was very pleased with the location. It is on a very pleasant street, nestled among embassies, and just a couple of blocks from Dupont Circle and many restaurants, also easy Metro access.
I liked the hotel's "art deco" style but more importantly the room was clean and quiet. I would highly recommend to others and would stay there again.

“Great Value! Great Hotel!”

I travel to DC often for business and decided to try the Carlyle Suites Hotel.

It is in a great location in trendy Dupont Circle and walking distance to the Metro and nightlife.

The rooms are really big and they have kitchen that are stocked with glassware, utensils, fridge and microwave. If you stay long like I do, this is a BIG bonus.

The free high speed internet access was great and they also let you use the Washington Sports Club for free to all of their guests.

The only drawback was the limited parking. If you can't find a space in their tiny lot, then you have to find street parking or use the garage about 3 blocks away. This was a little annoying.

Overall, this was a great stay and I would totally come back

“Great location, No A/C”

I like the location of this hotel. It's about 0.3 miles from the Dupont Circle Metro Station. The neighborhood is mostly residential with a spattering of embassies and stores. There's a Safeway grocery not far from the hotel. The hotel room is like a mini-apartment with a kitchenette complete with counter top range, microwave, refrigerator, and toaster. They also provide you with pots, pan, cooking utensils, dinnerware, silverware, and glasses. If you don't feel like eating out, you can simply buy groceries at Safeway and cook them at the hotel. I also liked the Tempurpedic mattress...it was different but I'm not sure if I would like one for myself. The staff was somewhat helpful but not very courteous. The only downside to my stay was the lack of A/C...it wasn't working and it can get stuffy in the room. A fan would have been helpful. Thank goodness the windows open partially. Also, wireless internet is only available in the lobby. If you want to use the free internet in the room, make sure you bring your own ethernet cord.

“Quiet hotel in lovely area”

The Carlyle Suites

This is a fairly small hotel in a lovely area of DC - embassies, tree-lined streets, great restaurants, lots of activity. The hotel is quiet and comfortable. We had a nice stay. One drawback - practically no parking. You have to park at a garage some four blocks away. Although the staff recommended the garage, they did not relate the garage’s hours or rules. When we checked out Sunday morning, I discovered the garage was closed on Sundays and had to spend almost an hour phoning the garage, trying to get someone to open it up so we could depart. When I went back to the hotel to complain to the manager that the staff should relate this information, the manager made me wait again – leaving me feeling they were not very responsive or concerned.
