“Routine Business Hotel”

NH Munchen Dornach Am Mcc

4 of 5 stars
Switzerland
Dec 20, 2007

NH hotels are consistently known for their stylishness and reasonable price. The NH München Dornach has a stylish flair, but it is more sparse and maybe a bit more cheap feeling than other NH hotels we have stayed in. It seemed more like a generic business hotel.

The location is pretty far out of the center of town in the middle of a newly developed business center. That makes this a tough place for tourists. The train platform is about a four minute walk from the hotel, and it was about 15-20 minutes by train into the city center.

As my wife and I planned a very last minute excursion for Oktoberfest, the in-town hotel options were simply too expensive. That is the beauty of the NH Dornach - it was downright cheap in comparison (about 1/3 the price of other, less respectable hotels). So on the basis of quaility for value, this place was off the chart. On a standalone basis, I might not have been all that excited about it.

Our room was fairly small. The furniture felt a bit like it had been outfitted at Ikea - not bad, just not what I would describe as nice. Or overly comfortable. The door only did a moderate job of blocking out hallway noise. As we were close to the elevator, this was a touch annoying.

One plus is the availability of services and amenities. Both a restaurant and bar are available, as well as a small fitness center. There is plenty of parking on site. They have a few free spots in front, but I never saw one open during our two-night stay. The underground parking is EUR 8 a night. A reasonable price for Munich hotels based on my research.

The hotel hits the key elements - new, clean and cheap - so it is a decent option if you are in town for business. It just might not be the perfect place for tourists unwilling to sacrifice convenience to save a few Euro. If it were not for the great relative value, I probably would have only granted 3 out of 5.

    • Disliked — The feel of the hotel was a bit cheap, so you get what you pay for, I guess.

“Excellent Impersonal Business Hotel”

NH Munchen Dornach Am Mcc

5 of 5 stars

The NH Dornach München is a new hotel located outside the Munich city center. It is geared toward business travelers, but we stayed here for Oktoberfest and found it to be an excellent choice regarding both facilities and location.

We got a room for 50 euros directly from the hotel's website during the opening night of Oktoberfest.

LOCATION

The hotel is easily accessible via car or train.

We arrived by car. It is located just a five minute drive from a highway.

There are 12 free parking spots in front of the hotel. They also have an underground parking garage with 200+ parking places at a cost of eight euros per day.

The hotel also is convenient to reach by train. It is a 10-15 minute walk from the Riem train stop off the S2 line. There also is a bus service directly between the hotel and station.

The hotel is located in an office park setting that is a bit isolated, so you'll probably walk alone from Riem to the hotel. But there is a clear path that goes between the station and the hotel.

In detail, take the stairs underneath the tracks. Leave from the south exit. Almost immediately on your left you will see a huge gold statue of a naked viking-looking guy. Continue straight ahead on the path. You'll pass the bus stop and wind your away over a small bridge. Then you'll come to a spot where the path forks into two directions. Stay to the left. After another five minutes, the path will lead you directly into the front of the hotel.

You'll want to take the train in the direction of Peterhausen. You purchase your subway tickets directly at the boarding area. There are two machines at the Riem stop. One of them can be displayed in a variety of languages. You can purchase a day ticket for all Munich zones for 8.50 euros. It is valid for your significant other plus up to five children, I think. So one ticket is all you need, although it lasts for just the day and not for 24 hours. The machine said it took credit cards but it didn't accept ours, so have some cash handy.

Coming from the hotel, simply go out the front door and follow the path until you reach the station. Note that the path is concrete so you can wheel luggage on it.

SERVICE

Front desk was efficient and all spoke english, among other languages.

Hotel offers quick check-out where you don't have to go to the lobby. You can view your hotel bill on your TV. However, if you have additional charges, you'll have to check out in person.

ROOMS

While the main parts of the hotel had a sterile, impersonal feel to them, the rooms were more warm and welcoming. Our room still felt geared to the business traveler, but it was comfortable and roomy.

Bed was very comfortable. They have different kinds of pillows and don't provide extra pillows or blankets in the rooms, so if you're picky about firm or soft pillows, be sure to state your preference.

There's also a nice work desk complemented with two comfortable leather chairs.

A good-sized TV on a rotating stand made watching TV from the desk or bed a snap.

Bathroom was very nice. Ours had a full bath and shower curtain.

INTERNET

Free wired high-speed internet access is available. The hotel advertised Wifi, but my computer didn't pick up a wireless network and I saw no info about it. There isn't an ethernet cord in the room so bring your own, although the front desk can provide them as well. Connection to the network was easy and worked well after one restart.

RESTAURANT

There's a bar area that has Premiere TV sports playing all the time. There's also a restaurant that serves breakfast in the morning and fairly upscale cuisine at night.

Breakfast is 20 euros per person. It includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, rolls, juice, coffee, and a large selection of jams and jellies. Quite an impressive display and everything tasted good. Just get there well before 11 am, since they start to prepare for lunch at that time.

We ate at the same restaurant for dinner. The menu was fancy. The portions were small. The prices were expensive. I'd eat at the bar or order room service instead.

OTHER SERVICES

There is a spa/gym area in the hotel. We didn't use it.

SUMMARY

We were very pleased with this hotel. It was a steal at 50 euros per night. Expect to pay 100+ normally. It does feel like a legitimate four-star hotel. It doesn't try to make you feel at home, but we weren't expecting that. Highly recommended as a tourist alternative to staying in downtown Munich.

“Not inexpensive - but a good hotel”

NH Munchen Dornach Am Mcc

We stayed (my partner and I) at the NH Dornach for 4 nights over Sept/Oct. Overall we found the location to be good (it is a bit far out but we knew this), the rooms to be very clean and comfortable and the response of staff to requests to be very prompt.

The hotel is approx 15 mins from the the centre of Munich by S-Bahn (Riem is the stop). The hotel is a 10 minute walk from Riem S-Bahn station (although there are also a few buses which take you almost direct to the hotel from Riem). The S-Bahn service is frequent (approx every 20 mins).

We pulled a map off the web which was very useful as the hotel can be a wee bit difficult to find the first time around. If you arrive from downtown cross under the tracks and follow the path. Walk down the path for approx 7 mins (follow the path past the road that forks around to the left) and take the first left turn on the path after that which will lead you direct to the hotel. We had no problems at all with walking but be aware if travelling on the path alone at night that it does feel a bit secluded.

The hotel does feel a bit far out to pop back for an afternoon siesta, and there aren't too many other dining options that we saw in the local vicinity other than the hotel, so keep this in mind if you don't want to stay in town to dine. We didn't dine at the hotel but (with the exception of breakfast!) it seemed reasonable.

We did have a few problems with bills etc so it definitely pays to be aware of what is/isn't included with your room and to check your bill carefully. We had one occasion where we were charged with water we hadn't taken and two where we were chaged for breakfast. For reference the breakfast is 16 euros if not included - an amazing selection but certainly not worth that!

The staff were very prompt at sorting out any issues however and providing additional pillows etc.

Overall - we enjoyed this hotel and would certainly recommend it - especially during periods where it it is difficult to find equivalent priced accomodation downtown.

“Good Hotel, but 20 minutes on the S-Bahn”

NH Munchen Dornach Am Mcc

I loved the hotel. Excellent property, excellent room, excellent service. The hotel is very German--super modern, exceptionally clean, everything in order....Alles in Ordnung!

My only regret in staying at this hotel is that it was a 20 minute S-Bahn ride (commuter train) into the center city. Really, the hotel is an excellent value during peak travel times and high hotel rates, but at less expensive times you can find the same in the city centre if you shop around.

“New and perfect”

Nice modern and newly hotel. Ideally situated between the ring and the city centre. Nice clean rooms, with a clean bathroom. Good, would defenitly stay there again.
One minor point, €8 for parking in the garage is perhaps a little bit (to) much.
