If you are traveling to this resort you will more than likely have fun as we had a great time with the friends we went with. We rated this hotel according to everything we encountered and based on our past experiences with all inclusive and island traveling. With this in mind, a 3 star resort to us and according to Trip Advisor is ‘average.’ We found the Riu Ocho Rios to be average and missing the details that would make it excellent.
THE BEACH
We give the beach 5 stars! Always clean and always chairs available in the sun or shade. We played volleyball everyday (2 courts to choose from), played horseshoes, snorkeled and swam. The beach is about 1/4 mile long. The Beach Party at night was a good time for people to dance and have fun at the bonfire.
FOOD
We ate daily at the Jerk Hut for lunch-excellent. They did run out of food one day so get there before 2pm. Tushima (Japanese) for dinner was the best of the restaurants that required reservations. Next best was the Steak House (outside restaurant), then Sir Richards. Mandalay was just a buffet of Chinese food and was not air conditioned, very hot and uncomfortable. We ate quickly and went to finish at the St. Ann's buffet to get outside in the open air. St. Ann's is very busy and chaotic after 7pm as there are multitudes of people everywhere seeking food. The pizzeria was a great midday or late night snack.
FRONT DESK
Huge improvements could be made here. When we arrived at the resort nobody greeted us or offered to help us with suitcases until after we had checked in. When we arrived around 430pm our room was not ready but luckily our friend's room was ready so we could store our bags in their room and go to the pool. We had emailed the hotel ahead of time to request a room on the top floor but were given a second floor room and told to check back as the hotel was full. We did not go back to check because we didn't want to move rooms again. We called politely for 4 days straight and visited the front desk to request an ironing board. Finally, on our last phone call once we got upset with them and asked to speak with the manager, we had an ironing board delivered within minutes. We had booked a Jr. Suite in order to have this provided upon arrival but this was not the case. Our friend ordered a surprise birthday cake to be delivered to their room for her husband's birthday and it never arrived. Upon checkout, there was no one to help load bags onto the shuttle as we saw at every other resort we stopped at on the way back to the airport.
THE POOL
We liked the beach a lot so we only went to the pools twice. (Once to each) The pool on the Suite side had some kind of slimy white substance in it, could be sunscreen build up. Pool bar was fun. The pool on the other side was more energetic with music and some games, water aerobics, a skit, and contests. They did play the same CD over and over. We asked for more reggae or steel drum and they did not have any other CDs.
STAFF
There were a few superstars that stood out and went above and beyond in service, it is too bad the other 75% of the workers were indifferent. We had money to tip and didn't hand it out to those that did not deserve it. The majority of the time unless we said 'Hi' to people first they wouldn't say anything. Sure the staff works hard to keep the place clean, but there is no sense of appreciation that you chose to visit their resort vs another.
ROOM:
Clean, bed is firm, A/C wasn't very cold, mosquitos everywhere. We spoke with several people on different floors and all of them seemed to have issues with mosquitos. We brought coils to burn to keep them out but they didn't work. We found that spraying ourselves with "OFF" was the only way to keep the mosquitos away at night. Neither us nor our friends ever left our door open longer than enough to enter or exit and the rooms were still infested daily.
ENTERTAINMENT
These people work extremely hard practicing and running games during the day then performing shows at night. The "Pre-Show" is a must see every night-fun games and prizes. KiKi, the MC, was our favorite.
TIPS:
Great to bring an insulated Mug (Wal-Mart) to save time going back and forth to the bar. Many people had mugs of their own as well.
Dunn's River Falls is VERY commercial: Tour Guide, Videographer, etc. If you are athletic, we suggest you leave the group that climbs up together in a line and climb at your own pace on your own path. They will try to prohibit this by telling you to stay with the group, but once we left the group, we were long gone. If you choose to stay with the group, just imagine yourself on a beautiful waterfall, just standing and waiting in line to get to the top-not very fun! We took the tour that leaves from the beach (Scuba Caribe), they took us snorkeling, had booze on board, but not a "Booze Cruise" and no music on board.
Take a candle and mosquito spray for the in-room odor and pests.
Book early evening reservations at the restaurants in order to see the nightly shows.
Take some cash to tip the people that deserve it and they WILL take care of you!
Bring locks for your suitcases and you will not have to worry about anyone going through your stuff.
Use higher SPF than you think you need, there were a plethora of burnt people!
Do not miss the Steel Drum band- Absolutely Fabulous!!
Good Luck!!
