Okay so here goes...
I've read the massive reviews on the RIU Negril here and other sites like Expedia, Travelocity, etc. Some reviews were great and some were not.
I saw for myself what many of you saw.
First let me say- Jamaica is all hustle, they depend on tourism. As a tourist you are doing your part by staying there. We work hard and want to play hard right? - but yet you get hassled the moment you get there to the moment you leave, and you are torn because you do feel for the ppl living there but spent much dollars trying to enjoy a little 5- days vacation. I do feel however, that customer service in general can use some improvement. I also flew Air Jamaica- that was hellish.
Okay so the resort- absolutely beautiful. The property is huge. The grounds and landscaping are gorgeous, great for pics. However, I do feel that the rooms can use some improvement:
At first glance- the rooms are inviting with the fruit platter, and stocked fridge. However, later on when settling in, you see the reality- cockroaches. I was in bldg 1 on the ground level. This was a turn off because I know what exotic bugs are since my family is also from the Caribbean, but these were common roaches. I also saw roaches in the buffet room. After asking a couple of times, they offered bldg 3- very far from the lobby and hotel amenities and no ac. It was only my sister and me, so that that was a no no. The room they offered also had no iron or ironing board. I also noticed in our original room, the ceiling fan stopped working after a while. Our last day it started to work again. The ac is also on a timer. I believe they turn all ac's off at 2:30 pm.
I went to the gym- trying to get a little work out in- the treadmill happened to be on a timer. I was about to finish off with a sprint, machine just quit. The others were out of service or unplugged. The gym is a joke LOL.- no free weights, no springs for the weight machines, you have to share.
I think their all inclusive should be all inclusive all day. There should be snacks to snack on. The food was decent however- they did not offer seafood, which I found odd- just fish.
I do believe the resort is exacting- meaning they nickel and dime you- they don't go above and beyond to appease their guests- not even a little compromise. They don't connect with the airports for you... 1 buck a minute to make a call (I used my cell, they do have networks you can pick up out there), 10 bucks for internet... The tours were a joke- I really enjoyed the Dunn's River climb however- that was definitely an experience. I aslo have it on dvd. Rick's cafe sunset cruise. - that's a waste. My sister could not swim, so we ended up staying on the boat and watched ppl jump. I did snorkel but when we got to Rick's Cafe, the currents were too strong, so I did not risk swimming over. I do believe this is unfair and they should be able to take those who do not swim to the cafe. This is a loss also to Rick's Cafe as well in as far as money (drinks, souvenirs, etc.). The other tours- well they make it sound nice- but when you got there, you just got a little history lesson in the middle of the ocean and that was your "ocean safari" tour. LOL
Over all I would recommend this hotel- as long as you are aware of some of the minor setbacks. I believe next time I will just do one tour and save more money. I wanted to try the atv's but heard they broke down.
Tips: Save your tipping.- I was tipping much in the beginning of my stay, then held on to my dollars- if you do tip, tip a dollar or 2, no more than that... I tipped to those who really made a lasting impression.
In as far as vendors- they are cool, bargain with them. They aren't stupid, they do have to live though so don't try to rob them of that. Its' more of an insult to give Jamaican dollars than US, but hey if you have and want to get rid of it then...
PIrates- the jetski men, be very careful. They also have other stuff on them - weed, coca, ectasy. If you smoke the herbals just watch yourself. Take your chit and walk away, don't linger.
Always be aware of your belongings. Don't sit your drinks down and come back to it.
Prepaying for transportation vouchers- they wait for other guests to fly in and other guests of different resorts. So don't think that you will be leaving right away. You may wait an hour or more before they take you to the hotel. Even leaving the driver was late- screwed up his muffler and we had to wait for the company to send 2 more buses. We were by a cliff. It was a mess. So maybe it's worth it just paying for a cab.
Would I visit Negril again?- maybe but, I will spend more time at the resort and perhaps do more things on my own- like Rick's Cafe or perhaps going the shopping areas nearby the resort. I also want to visit Montego Bay with some ppl who are already from there. I have some Jamaican background but I know no estranged family in Jamaica LOL.
Although long winded- I hope I as somewhat helpful. I did enjoy my stay with my sister. It was her 30th birthday so we did what we had to do- vacay baby.
