speeding on highways?!!!! |
|
So, you want to know if it's okay to break the law whilst on your visit and to put your own and others lives at risk by exceeding the speed limit? Please don't for everyone's sake.
|
steady on!!!! no one said that i have any intentions of breaking laws in your country. i just want to no if i go 5mph over the limit if i am gona get slapped with a hefty fine or if the police in your country are like those in uk who often use their discretion up to a certain point. im sorry if i offend anyone with this post but that aint the intention

Ordinarily you'd be safe going LESS than 10miles above the posted limit. For example if the speed limit is 65 you can easily go 72with no prob. You will find the flow of traffic going at least that fast. Anything above that and you are risking a ticket. I doubt if a police officer will just say to you "Oh you are from another country so our laws don't count-go on your way"

I think you are taking the question a little too seriously - most people in the UK do not drive at a strict 70mph and it is actually safer that not everyone is driving at the same speed. You can drive faster than 70mph and still be safe - i think 90 is a little excessive though. What the poster is asking is that when safe to do so i.e. at night time when there are few cars around, how fast will you be able to drive. I think that as long as you dont drive like an idiot - changing lanes all the time, undertaking, tailgaiting etc etc then you will be fine around 80mph. I have a friend who lives in Boston who will drive around 75-80mph and says that is pretty normal. This is on the main motorway though. In built up areas or in heavy traffic you should stick to the limit. If unsure, go with the flow of traffic - if everyone around you is going 60mph then do that dont try and fly past at 90 as that is unsafe and more than likely that if the worst was to happen, it would be some poor innocent family coming off worse rather than the idiot tearing down the inside lane. Just be careful and go the speed you think is appropriate for the time. I would not advise doing 90mph though, US police are a lot stricter despute where you licence comes from. I think they also give on the spot fines there like in Europe. In the US you must always have your full paper and plastic licence on you as well as the registration documents of the car.

For example: I 10 in California is 70mph, in Arizona it's 75 mph and in Texas it's 80 mph. The only place on this stretch I got ticketed was in Texas doing 88 mph. You can't pay the fine to the officer and I never paid it and never heard anything about it being from Europe. Nevertheless, as Riffsmom has said, driving a few miles over the speedlimit won't be that bad. We never got ticketed driving 5 mph or so faster than allowed speedlimit. Just be careful near schools and stick to 15mph when kids are present. When a schoolbus stops come to a complete standstill. I'm more worried about driving at night on unknows roads on the "wrong side". Watch for wildlife. Police won't send you away showing a foreign licence but just be friendly and polite and admit that you were wrong and maybe they let you go away without a fine, as we experienced as well. With a rental car just show them your rental agreement and your driving licence will be fine, no need for an international one. Tet

Stay under 75 and you probably won't get a ticket (although I have friends who have, it's rare). The highway patrol is very strict here. If you're caught, you'll get a hefty fine. If you don't pay that fine, you'll be unable to come back into the US (a warrant would be issued).

It's becoming more and more popular for municipalities and the highway patrol to forward requests for unpaid tickets to the car rental companies who will, in turn, charge the credit card of the customer for the fine. When you sign your car rental agreement, the "fine print" on the back of the contract (which no one reads) discloses the car rental company's intention to charge customers for any unpaid traffic tickets. Your signature on the contract is your agreement to pay these fines. In general, I would drive at the same speed as the rest of the traffic and you should have no problem. Good luck!

Yeah, if you get a parking ticket, they will take it out of your credit card if you are from a foreign country. I got away with speeding on my drive to Vegas before when I told the Chp officer i am from germany, he just told me that when he sees me again speeding, i will be fined. So i guess visitors get some slack here and there. I would not push it though. I think to go 5 miles over, put on cruise control would be just fine

Still waiting to be charged via Hertz. Maybe the officer torn the ticket to pieces after all......

Whatever you do, do not exceed 100mph. While, as others have said, you can usually risk a few mph over the posted limit without much risk of the police bothering with you, it can happen. But if it does, they'll write you the ticket, and send you on your way, and you'll have to pay the fine or face more consequences. But if they catch you exceeding 100mph, its a different level of offense and they take you to jail immediately, which would ruin your vacation, without doubt.
