We have just returned from a week at the Sofia. The hotel is magnificent and we have never experienced such incredible room service/cleaning. It was so lovely to stay at a small boutique hotel in an original building built in the 1940's. ideally located in the Gaslamp Quarter and yes is located right next to bus station but no noise... more

My boyfriend and I just had a mixed experience at the Sofia Hotel this weekend: THE GOOD: THE PRICE - The Sofia was almost half the price of our other favorite San Diego hotels. THE LOCATION - While the immediate neighborhood can have some sketchy characters (it's next to a bunch of bail bond shops and a Greyhound station), it's... more

So, I read several reviews of The Sofia and I was pretty confident in the research I'd done, most reviews were great....and then there were some not so great reviews that concerned me. But, I realize that different travelers have different needs and expectations. So here goes: My husband and I (early 30s and extensive travelers) stayed at the Sofia... more

I stayed at The Sofia for 6 days in June 2008. The hotel is on the National Historic Register and was built many years ago. It was completely refurbished a year or two ago and they have done a really nice job with it. The rooms are small, as can be expected with any older hotel, but nicely appointed with... more

I stayed at the Sofia hotel while I was in town for a convention. It is in a very convenient location - in the evening we walked from the convention center through the Gaslamp Quarter and right to the hotel. There are many restaurants nearby, it is a very quick ride to the airport, and the corner coffee shop is... more

My wife and I decided it was time to take a vacation with our dog instead of leaving him with my in-laws. We found this one and decided to try it out. When we arrived and were checking in the staff was very friendly and they even offered dog biscuits to our dog. They showed us places that were pet-friendly... more

I stayed for 4 nights at the hotel while I was attending a conference at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. It was a nice experience. The room is smaller than normal but it was clean and nicely decorated. It's cozy for 2 people. I know there have been many complaints about the shower, but if you put the bathmat that is... more

I stayed at the Sofia for 5 nights on a recent business trip and have a mixed opinion. The pluses for me were: - A lovely room for a great price: I booked one of the larger suites and was glad I did - using the fire exit map for scale, I figured out how small the regular rooms were... more

We stayed here for my friend's bachelorette party. Although the hotel itself is very trendy and modern, simple things like the breaker being out in the bathroom and the sink being stopped up and missing the pull to release the drain were bothersome. Even after they sent someone up to fix the breaker (in plain clothes?) it still didn't work.... more

Stayed here for 3 nights in November 2007. Location is excellent, downtown with a short walk to Horton Plaza and the Gaslamp Quarter. Because it is right next to the Greyhound station it does attract some homeless people, but we were never bothered once. San Diego is certainly not alone in having homeless people, and this is hardly the fault... more
