This museum is the most amazing museum I have ever been to. It is also very inexpensive. They have an incredible collection of ancient statues and busts from all over Greece as well as artifacts from Egypt (including a mummy). At 7 euros, the National Archaeological Museum of Athens is an amazing bargain. What a superlative collection! We spent hours there, until we couldn’t take in any more, and still saw fewer than half the rooms. They have some incredible pieces, including the well-known smiling Kouros, the spear-throwing Poseidon rescued from the sea, the jockey of Artemision, and Trojan gold... more

This is a truely superb museum, but beware - the bookshop is closed for renovation, and there are no plans yet alone guide books available. You can buy a museum guide in the bookshop at the entrance to the Acropolis, but this is not open at weekends. more
