Like many historical sites, without an imagination, you can't get the full effect. If you didn't know any better, you are merely in an old office building and apartment. As reviewers before have mentioned, go during off-peak hours (I was actually there around 3:30 pm) and you'll have no problems getting in or navigating around the museum.
